What Are Adverbs and How Are They Used in Sentences? Explore Their Definition, Types, and Examples for a Better Understanding in English Grammar.

What is an Adverb?

Just like an adjective gives us extra details about a noun in a sentence, an adverb is used to give us more information about the verb or the action happening in the sentence. It can also describe an adjective or another adverb.

Definition of Adverb:

An Adverb is a word which modifies the meaning of a Verb, and Adjective or another Adverbs used in the sentence.

क्रिया-विशेषण (Adverb) वह शब्द होता है जो Verb, Adjective तथा वाक्य में प्रयुक्त अन्य Adverb की विशेषता प्रकट करता है।

Adverb’s Definitions by the popular Dictionaries:

  • A word that adds more information about place, time, manner, cause or degree to a verb, an adjective, a phrase or another adverb. – Oxford Learner’s Dictionary
  • A word that describes or gives more information about a verb, adjective, adverb, or phrase. – Cambridge Dictionary
  • A word used to modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb and often used to show degree, manner, place, or time. – Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Examples of Adverb:

  • He worked the sum quickly. (quickly- क्रिया (Verb) worked को modify कर रहा है।)
  • This flower is very beautiful. (very- विशेषण (Adjective) beautiful को modify कर रहा है।)
  • She spoke quite correctly. (quite- क्रिया-विशेषण (Adverb) correctly को modify कर रहा है।)

Modify का अर्थ है- अर्थ में वृद्धि करना अर्थात विशेषता प्रकट करना। अतः उपर्युक्त वाक्यों में quickly, very और quite- Adverbs हैं।

अतः ADVERB (क्रिया-विशेषण) वह शब्द होता है जो-

  • किसी क्रिया (Verb) की विशेषता बताता है। जैसे- He works(verb) hard(adv.).
  • किसी विशेषण (Adjective) की विशेषता बताता है। जैसे- He is very(adv.) good(adj.).
  • किसी क्रिया-विशेषण (Adverb) की विशेषता बताता है। जैसे- She works very(adv.) hard(adv).
  • किसी Preposition की विशेषता बताता है। जैसे- The helicopter hovered exactly(adv.) over(prep.) his house.
  • किसी Conjunction की विशेषता बताता है। जैसे- He likes her simply(adv.) because(conj.) she has a clear conscience.
  • किसी वाक्य (Sentence) की विशेषता बताता है। जैसे- Fortunately(adv.), no one was hurt(sentence).

सामान्यतया Noun या Pronoun की विशेषता बताने का काम Adjective करते हैं, किन्तु कुछ ऐसे Adverb होते हैं, जो किसी Noun या Pronoun की विशेषता भी बताने का कार्य करते हैं। ये Adverb निम्न हैं- Only, Even, At last, Almost.

  • Only(adv.) Rohit(noun) can help you
  • Only(adv.) I(pronoun) know the truth.
  • Almost everyone in the class passed.
  • Rohan wins at last. or At last, Rohan wins.

Oxford Dictionary के अनुसार, “क्रिया-विशेषण वह शब्द है जो किसी Verb, Adjective तथा किसी अन्य Adverb की विशेषता प्रकट करे।” जैसे-

इस वाक्य में quickly– Adverb है जो runs क्रिया की विशेषता प्रकट करता है।

अर्थात Quickly modifies the verb ‘runs’.

अर्थात Very modifies the Adjective ‘sweet’,

  1. Sita reads quite clearly.

इस वाक्य में quite Adverb है जो ‘clearly’ क्रिया-विशेषण (Adverb) की विशेषता प्रकट करता है।

अर्थात Quite modifies the Adverb ‘clearly’

नोट– विशेषता प्रकट करने के लिए अंग्रेजी भाषा में दो शब्दों-(i) Qualifies और (ii) Modifies का प्रयोग होता है। दोनों शब्दों के अर्थ समान है किन्तु व्याकरण की परम्परा के अनुसार Adjective ‘qualify’ करता है और Adverb ‘modify’ करता है।

TYPES OF ADVERBS

क्रिया-विशेषण (Adverb) तीन प्रकार के होते हैं-

  1. Simple Adverb (सरल क्रिया-विशेषण)
  2. Relative Adverb (सम्बन्धवाचक क्रिया-विशेषण)
  3. Interrogative Adverb (प्रश्नवाचक क्रिया-विशेषण) ।

SIMPLE ADVERB

Simple Adverb द्वारा Time (समय), Place (स्थान), Number (संख्या) Manner (रीति या विधि), Degree or Quantity (परिमाण या मात्रा), Affirmation (स्वीकृति) तथा Negation (निषेध) को प्रकट किया जाता है।

Types of Simple Adverb:

7. Adverb of Negation

इस क्रिया-विशेषण से निषेधात्मक भाव प्रकट होता है; जैसे-

  • I do not know.
  • He never said so.

उपर्युक्त उदाहरणों में not और never- Simple Adverb of Negation हैं।

RELATIVE ADVERB

सम्बन्धवाचक क्रिया-विशेषण (Relative Adverb) दो वाक्यों को जोड़ता है और अपने से पहले प्रयुक्त Noun की ओर संकेत करते हुए Time, Place, Reason और Manner स्पष्ट करता है; जैसे-

  • I know the time when he will come here.
  • Tell me the place where he was born.
  • Do you know the reason why he came here?

उपर्युक्त उदाहरणों में when, where, why- Relative Adverb हैं।

Functions of Relative Adverb

सम्बन्धवाचक क्रिया-विशेषण के तीन कार्य हैं-

  1. Adverb की तरह Verb की विशेषता प्रकट करना ।
  2. अपने पूर्ववर्ती (Antecedent) Noun के साथ सम्बन्ध प्रकट करना।
  3. दो विभिन्न वाक्यों (Sentences) को मिलाना।

उपर्युक्त कार्यों को समझने के लिए निम्नलिखित वाक्य को पढ़िए-

  • I know the time when he will come here.

इस वाक्य में when- Relative Adverb है ।

  1. (A) When द्वारा दो वाक्य जोड़े गये हैं- (a) I know the time, तथा (b) He will come here. इन्हीं दो वाक्यों को मिलाकर I know the time when he will come here बना है।
  2. (B) When द्वारा Time से सम्बन्ध स्थापित किया गया है। Time-Noun है। इसे when का Antecedent (पूर्ववर्ती) कहेंगे।
  3. (C) When द्वारा वाक्य की क्रिया-will come की विशेषता प्रकट की गयी है।

INTERROGATIVE ADVERB

प्रश्नवाचक क्रिया-विशेषण का प्रयोग बाक्य के आरम्भ में आकर प्रश्न पूछने (Asking Question) के लिए किया जाता है, जैसे-

  • Where are you going?
  • When will you go to Agra?
  • Why are you sad?
  • How did he pass?

उपर्युक्त उदाहरणों में When, Where, Why, How- प्रश्नवाचक क्रिया-विशेषण (Interrogative Adverb) हैं क्योंकि इनका प्रयोग प्रश्न पूछने के लिए हुआ है।

अतः जिन Adverbs से प्रश्न पूछना ज्ञात हो, उन्हें प्रश्नवाचक क्रिया-विशेषण कहा जाता है।

Functions of Interrogative Adverb

प्रश्नवाचक क्रिया-विशेषण के कार्य को समझने के लिए निम्न वाक्य को पढ़िए-

  • Where are you going?

  1. Interrogative Adverb में केवल चार शब्दों- When, Where, Why, How का ही प्रयोग होता है।
  2. ये शब्द वाक्य के आरम्भ में आते हैं।
  3. इन शब्दों से बनने वाले वाक्य के अन्त में प्रश्नवाचक चिन्ह लगा होता है।
  4. इनसे पहले कोई Noun नहीं आता है।
  5. इन शब्दों का प्रयोग Simple Sentence में ही होता है।

Simple Vs. Interrogative Vs. Relative Adverbs

COMPARISON OF ADVERBS

  1. Positive Degree
  2. Comparative Degree
  3. Superlative Degree

1. Positive Degree:  वह Degree (अवस्था) है जिससे एक व्यक्ति या वस्तु के कार्य करने की विधि ज्ञात होती है; जैसे-

  • Rama runs fast.
  • Rahim came early.

2. Comparative Degree: वह Degree है जिससे दो व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं के कार्य करने की विधि की तुलना की जाती है; जैसे-

  • Mohan runs faster than Rajesh.
  • Umesh came earlier than Gopal.

3. Superlative Degree: वह Degree है जिसमें दो से अधिक व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं के मध्य उनकी कार्यविधि की तुलना की जाती है; जैसे-

  • Mohan runs fastest of all.
  • Umesh came earliest of all.

नोट

  1. Now, Then, Where, There, Once आदि कुछ ऐसे Adverbs हैं जिनकी तुलना नहीं की जा सकती है।
  2. केवल Adverb of Manner, Adverb of Degree तथा Adverb of Time की ही तुलनात्मक अवस्थायें होती हैं।

DEGREES OF COMPARISON

Positive से Comparative और Superlative Degree बनाने के नियम निम्नलिखित हैं-

नियम 1. कुछ क्रिया-विशेषणों के अन्त में ‘er’ जोड़ने पर Comparative तथा ‘est’ जोड़ने पर Superlative Degree के क्रिया-विशेषण बन जाते हैं, जैसे-

PositiveComparativeSuperlative
Hardharderhardest
Fastfasterfastest
Longlongerlongest
Soonsoonersoonest
Slowslowerslowest
Nearnearernearest

नियम 2. कुछ क्रिया-विशेषणों के अन्त में ‘ly‘ होता है। ऐसे क्रिया-विशेषणों के आरम्भ में more बढ़ाने से Comparative और most बढ़ाने पर Superlative Degree के क्रिया-विशेषण बन जाते हैं; जैसे-

PositiveComparativeSuperlative
Clearly.more clearlymost clearly
Slowlymore slowlymost slowly
Swiftlymore swiftlymost swiftly

नियम 3. निम्नलिखित क्रिया-विशेषणों की तुलनात्मक अवस्थायें बनाने के लिए कोई निश्चित नियम नहीं है। ऐसे क्रिया-विशेषणों में शब्द-परिवर्तन ही किया जाता है; जैसे-

PositiveComparativeSuperlative
Badlyworseworst
Wellworseworst
Littlebetterbest
Farlessleast
Latefartherfarthest
Muchlaterlatest, last

Usage of Degrees of Adverb:

निम्नलिखित वाक्यों में Adverb की Degrees के प्रयोगों को पढ़िए-

  1. Rama writes well. (Positive Degree)
Hari writes better than Rama. (Comparative Degree)
Sohan writes best of all. (Superlative Degree)
  2. Do you work much? (Positive Degree)
I work more than you. (Comparative Degree)
Surjit works most of the three of us. (Superlative Degree)
  3. The crow flies swiftly. (Positive Degree)
The hawk flies more swiftly than the crow. (Comparative Degree)
Pigeons fly most swiftly of all birds. (Superlative Degree)

POSITION OF ADVERBS

क्रिया-विशेषण की स्थिति (Position) के विषय में सामान्य नियम (General Rule) यह है कि Adverb जिस शब्द की विशेषता प्रकट करे, उसे उसी के पास रखना चाहिए।

Adverb के प्रयोग की तीन Positions (स्थितियाँ) हैं जो निम्नलिखित हैं-

  1. Front Position (वाक्य के आरंभ में)
  2. Mid Position (वाक्य के मध्य में)
  3. End Position (वाक्य के अंत में)

1. Front Position: इस स्थिति में Adverb का प्रयोग वाक्य के आरम्भ में होता है; जैसे-

  • Where do you live?
  • When will he come?
  • Why did he say so?
  • How are you?

2. Mid Position: इस स्थिति में Adverb का प्रयोग वाक्य के मध्य में होता है; जैसे

  • I never smoke.
  • The sun always rises in the east.
  • This is the house where I was born.
  • You are very fat.
  • He came just at five.
  • He is never late.

3. End Position: इस स्थिति में Adverb का प्रयोग वाक्य के अन्त में होता है, जैसे-

  • He came here.
  • You will go there.
  • He ran fast.
  • All the boys in this class work well.
  • She spoke fluently.

VERB के अनुसार ADVERB की स्थिति

वाक्य की क्रिया के अनुसार Adverb की स्थिति निश्चित होती है अतः Adverb की स्थिति ज्ञात करने के लिए निम्नलिखित नियमों पर ध्यान दीजिए-

RULE 1. Adverb का प्रयोग अकर्मक क्रिया (Intransitive Verb) के बाद में होता है, जैसे-

  • He is late.
  • You have come here.
  • Sit down.
  • She is out.
  • He writes well.
  • You played carelessly.

RULE 2. Adverb का प्रयोग Transitive Verb के Object (कर्म) के पश्चात होता है, जैसे-

  • You helped Akash very much.
  • Have you heard it before?
  • You should do it again.
  • I hurt my knee yesterday.

RULE 3. Adverb of Degree (Almost, Quite, Just, Too, Nearly आदि) जब किसी विशेषण या अन्य क्रिया-विशेषण की विशेषता प्रकट करते हैं तब वे उन Adjectives तथा Adverb से पहले आते हैं; जैसे-

  • His answer is quite wrong.
  • He is perfectly right.
  • These mangoes are almost ripe.
  • I am rather busy.
  • She is too careless.
  • Vina sings pretty well.
  • Do not speak so fast.
  • The dog is nearly dead.

RULE 4. Enough के प्रयोग पर विशेष ध्यान देना चाहिए। Enough उस शब्द के पश्चात आता है जिसकी विशेषता उसके द्वारा प्रकट होती है; जैसे-

  • He spoke loud enough to be heard.
  • This book is good enough for my need.
  • You know well enough my intention.
  • She is old enough to know better.

RULE 5. Adverb of Number (Always, Never, Ever, Often, Usually, Rarely, Sometimes, Seldom) सामान्यतया Full Verb ‘be’ के बाद रखे जाते हैं, किन्तु अन्य Full Verbs से पहले प्रयुक्त होते हैं; जैसे-

  • You are never late.
  • He always tries to do his best.
  • He seldom comes here.
  • I am usually busy in April.
  • The sun always rises in the east.
  • The principal is seldom out.

RULE 6. Adverb of Manner (Slow, Fast, Hard, Foolishly, Quietly आदि) तथा Adverb of Place (Here, There, Somewhere, Anywhere, Everywhere) सामान्यतया Object के बाद आते हैं; जैसे-

  • The thief entered the room quietly.
  • I could not find my book anywhere.
  • He has seen me somewhere.

RULE 7. यदि कोई क्रिया सहायक क्रिया और मुख्य से मिलकर बनी है, तो Adverb का प्रयोग सहायक क्रिया के बाद में होता है; जैसे-

  • I have not done it.
  • You will certainly miss the train.
  • We were very kindly received.
  • Rome was not built in a day.
  • He did not know my address.
  • He could not speak.

USE CASES OF SOME ADVERBS

Very तथा Much के प्रयोग में अन्तर एवं समानता:

(A) Very का प्रयोग Positive degree के साथ होता है। जैसे- very good, very wise, very lucky, very honest लेकिन much का Comparative Degree के साथ; जैसे: much better, much wiser, much luckier, much more honest etc.

नोट: Very much + comparative degree का प्रयोग होता है; जैसे- Very much better, very much wiser, very much luckier etc.

(B) Very या much का प्रयोग Superlative Degree के साथ भी होता है।

  • The very best boy.

(C) Very का प्रयोग Present Participle के पहले होता है; जैसे: very interesting, very daring, very confusing, very boring, very entertaining. किन्तु much का Past Participle के साथ; जैसे: much surprised, much grieved, much admired etc.

नोट: Very का प्रयोग Past Participle के पहले नहीं होता है किन्तु निम्नलिखित Past Participles के पहले Very का प्रयोग होता है, जैसे- very tired, very dejected, very contented, very discontented, very pleased, very drunk, very limited, very delighted.

Quite का अर्थ है ‘perfectly या completely’ (पूर्णतया, पूर्णरूपेण) और इसका प्रयोग ‘very’ की जगह नहीं होता है। अतः

  • She is quite lovely. (Incorrect)
  • You are quite handsome. (Incorrect)

इन वाक्यों का शुद्ध रूप है-

  • She is very lovely.
  • You are very handsome.

Fairly और  Rather

(A) Fairly का प्रयोग Positive Degree के साथ होता है। जैसे: fairly wise, fairly good etc. किन्तु, Rather का प्रयोग Positive तथा Comparative Degree के साथ होता है; जैसे: rather bad, rather difficult; rather worse, rather hotter, etc.

(B) Fairly के बाद too का प्रयोग नहीं होता है जबकि Rather के बाद too का प्रयोग भी होता है; जैसे: fairly too good कहना गलत है। लेकिन, rather too good कहना बिल्कुल सही है।

(C) Fairly के बाद Pleasant Adjectives का प्रयोग होता है; जैसे: fairly wise, fairly beautiful, etc.

Rather unpleasant adjectives ; rather wicked, rather difficult, rather troublesome, rather dull etc. किन्तु, rather amusing, rather good, rather clever, rather pretty, rather beautiful का प्रयोग किया जा सकता है।

Too का प्रयोग

(A) Too का अर्थ है also, जैसे:-

  • I too was invited to tea.

(B) Too का अर्थ है more than required (आवश्यकता से अधिक), इसका प्रयोग Unpleasant Adjectives के साथ होता है। जैसे: too bad, too naughty, too wicked, too fat, too dull, etc.

अत: too glad, too happy, too pleased, too healthy आदि कहना गलत है।

I am too glad to meet you का अर्थ है ‘मैं आपसे मिलकर इतना खुश हूँ जितना नहीं होना चाहिए’। इस वाक्य का शुद्ध रूप होगा-

  • I am very glad to meet you.

(C) Too . . . to पर आधारित वाक्यों में too के बाद अर्थ के अनुसार Pleasant Adjective का प्रयोग भी हो सकता है।

  • He is too intelligent to be cheated. (=He is so intelligent that he cannot be cheated.)

Too + Adjective

  • He is too tall. (वह इतना ज्यादा लंबा है जितना नहीं होना चाहिए।)
  • She is too slim. (वह इतनी ज्यादा दुबली-पतली है जितना नहीं होना चाहिए।)
  • It is too cold. (इतनी अधिक ठंड है जितना नहीं होना चाहिए।)

Verb + Adjective

  • He is very tall. (वह बहुत लंबा है।)
  • She is very slim. (वह बहुत दुबली-पतली है।)
  • It is very cold. (बहुत ठंड है।)

So का प्रयोग

‘So’ का प्रयोग ‘very’ के स्थान पर नहीं हो सकता। ‘So’ के बाद ‘that’ का एवं ‘Too’ के बाद ‘to’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जैसे:

  • I am so happy. (Incorrect)
  • I am very happy. (Correct)
  • I am so happy that I am unable to control my feelings. (Correct)

Enough

  • She is wise enough to understand your intention. (Incorrect)
  • She is enough wise to understand your intention. (Correct)
  • He has enough money to buy this car. (Correct)

Positive Degree + enough: Enough के पहले हमेशा Adjective या Adverb के Positive Degree का प्रयोग होता है।

  1. He is faster enough to defeat you. (Incorrect)
  2. He is intelligent enough to be selected for the post of lecturer. (Incorrect)

पहले वाक्य में faster के बदले fast तथा दूसरे वाक्य में bravest के बदले brave का प्रयोग होगा क्योंकि Positive Degree + enough का प्रयोग होता है।

Yet का प्रयोग

Yet का प्रयोग ‘अब तक’ अर्थात् ‘बोलने के समय तक’ (up to the moment/time of speaking) के अर्थ में Interrogative तथा Negative Sentence में verb के बाद या verb + object के बाद होता है।

नोट: Yet का प्रयोग present perfect के negative वाक्य में होता है न कि Past Tense में। जैसे-

  • The postman did not come yet.
  • The postman has not come yet.
  • Didn’t the postman come yet?
  • Hasn’t the postman come yet?

Too much एवं Much too

Too Much के बाद noun का प्रयोग होता है। लेकिन Much too के बाद adjective का प्रयोग होता है, जैसे-

  • He is too much worried. (Incorrect)
  • He is much too worried. (Correct)
  • I have too much work to do. (Correct)
